| We started as two people who rescued a little 9 month old colt frozen to the ground in -10f temps, 30mph winds making for a -50f wind chill - hence what would soon become his name: WindChill - at a farm he had been boarded at. From the moment we rescued him, our life would be forever changed.
Soon we were more than two people - we were a group of neighbors who had heard of the little colt's plight and came to ask what they could do - the burden of caring for WindChill around the clock became one shared by more. That 'more' became more and more as the world became aware of WindChill's fight for life and the amazing spirit contained in a body that had become frail from malnourishment, dehydration, and the extreme cold conditions he had been left out in. His quiet resolve and hope burned brightly in his eyes and drove us all onward. If he could be so hopeful in the face of what he had endured…then so could we all! Day after day, with the help of his friends and family, WindChill would rise to his feet - and the world cheered. For 20 days we laughed and cried with the little colt with the gentle spirit and giant determination. We survived on the caring of people who brought or sent coffee, blankets, and food from all over the country for our volunteers.
Why? Because we had to try; because we would want someone to try and save us if we were in the same awful circumstance; because humans had put him in this position and because it was our duty as humans to try and get him out of it - he didn't ask to be born, he didn't ask to be
neglected -- all he asked for when he called to us across that wind-swept, bitterly cold pasture was to please help him stop hurting. He needed us, he deserved that help, and he got it. And lastly, because he is as much one of the Lord's beings as any one of us. He was no less deserving of a chance at life, and possibly even
more so to make up for what his life had become up til then with his slow death march through the valley of starvation and neglect. Someday we as people will in part be judged in how we treated those beings that God entrusted us with dominion over. It's a measure
of who we are.
Today we are a group of volunteers who have set out to change the attitudes that caused this loss and the laws that allowed it. By providing educational programs and materials to children, we hope to stop abuse and neglect before it occurs. Through our work supporting – and performing – equine rescues we will make a difference living our beliefs. Our gelding program will support our goal of reducing the number of unplanned and often-times unwanted horses left to fend for themselves by working with horse owners as well as associated equine professionals. WindChill's spirit brought hope to the world and we will continue to bring that hope to those who feel none. |
